A qualitative case study on mothers¡¯ experience with the process of college admission
Hwang Chi-Eun

Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to provide in-depth analyses on the experiences of the 4 mothers of the college applicants through a qualitative case study method. The focus is on how the mothers go through, perceive and internalize their experiences in the admission processes. The study shows that the mothers consider themselves playing a significant supportive role by providing moral and financial support to their children while putting pressure on themselves to perform better. Through this, the role of mothers in the admission processes is not limited to the role of physical care, economic support, and life management, and they attempt to play the role of a more mental area, such as information providers and psychological managers, in the long and difficult process. This study characterizes different types of psychological difficulties of the mothers such as fear, anxiety, self-restraint, and tension concerning the college admissions of their children. Mothers would benefit from proper counseling and emotional coaching that can help them realize and take control of their psychological issues which can empower them to feel self-reliant regardless of external circumstances.
